Terms of Service
Last updated: 17 October 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and Jack Pennington ("we", "us"), who runs Halves in the United Kingdom. By creating an account or using Halves you agree to them. Please also read our Privacy Policy.
1. What Halves is
Halves helps you record shared costs: who paid, who owes what, and when it's settled up. It keeps a running balance with each friend and in each group.
Halves never moves money. Recording a payment in Halves is a record of money that has already changed hands some other way; nothing is sent. Balances in Halves are records kept by you and the people you share with. They aren't loans, and we don't collect, guarantee or enforce them.
Converted amounts (for example, showing euros in pounds) use the European Central Bank's published reference rates and are for information only.
2. Your account
- You must be 16 or over to use Halves.
- You can sign up with Sign in with Apple, Google or an email address and password. Keep your sign-in details safe; you're responsible for what happens in your account.
- Give us accurate details, and keep your email address up to date so you can recover your account.
3. Using Halves with other people
- When you add a split or payment, everyone in it can see it, and it changes their balance too. Only add people you actually share costs with, and record amounts honestly.
- You can add people who aren't on Halves yet as placeholders. When they join, their history can be linked to their account with their agreement.
- Group members can see the group's splits, payments and activity. Group admins can change the group's settings, and can delete or restore the group.
- If you disagree with something someone else added, sort it out with them. We can't decide who owes whom.
4. Reading receipts and suggestions
Halves can read receipt photos to save you typing, and suggest which card payments look shared. These features can make mistakes, so check the amounts and people before you save. You're responsible for what you save.
5. Bank import
Where it's available, you can connect a bank account through our open-banking provider, TrueLayer, to turn transactions into splits. That connection is also covered by TrueLayer's terms, which you'll see before you connect. You can disconnect at any time in Settings.
6. Your content
What you add to Halves (splits, notes, photos, receipt images) stays yours. You give us permission to store, process and show it to the people you share it with, only to run Halves. When you delete your account, shared splits stay for the other people in them, shown as "Deleted account", so their balances still add up.
7. Things you must not do
Don't use Halves to break the law, harass or mislead people, add someone's details without a good reason, upload content you don't have the right to share, interfere with or overload the service, get around its security or limits, or access other people's accounts or data.
8. Price
Halves is currently free. If we ever introduce paid features, we'll tell you the price clearly before you pay, and nothing you already use for free will start costing money without your agreement.
9. Changes and availability
We keep improving Halves, so features may change. We aim to keep it running, but it may sometimes be unavailable for maintenance or reasons outside our control. If we make a change to these terms that matters, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it applies.
10. Ending
You can stop using Halves and delete your account at any time in Settings › Delete account. We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms; where we can, we'll tell you why first and give you a chance to export your history.
11. Our responsibility to you
We provide Halves with reasonable care and skill. We're responsible for loss or damage you suffer that's a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care. We're not responsible for loss that isn't foreseeable, for business losses, or for money owed between you and other people.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or anything else that can't be limited under English law, and nothing affects your legal rights as a consumer.
12. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you can also bring claims in your local courts. If you have a complaint, email jackcpennington@gmail.com first; we'll try to put it right.
